Highlander Warriors bring a touch of Renaissance to Silicon ValleyBy Julie Davis Berry Executive Editor
Long ago in a land far away men wore long hair and kilts and dueled to the death with swords to prove whose clan was the better, the stronger…and women, well they just looked really good in their long flowing dresses and tended to the wounded men or celebrated with the triumphant warriors.
But wait, you don’t have to travel back in time to experience this scene you simply have to attend a performance by the Highlander Warriors. The HW perform ‘sword theater’, a precisely choreographed re-enactment of the sword duels of Scottish Warriors from days of old. They perform at Renaissance Fairs, The Campbell Highland Games, and are a popular attraction at middle schools in the Bay Area or anywhere there is a desire for a ‘grand Scottish battle.’
Highlander Warrior Founder Richard Brown, has always had a passion for his Scottish heritage and after attending several Renaissance Fairs became frustrated that they “had so little live steel fighting. We wanted to show them how it could be done. Once we started we realized that there was a market out there for this,” he said. “We love it when people say that they felt like they were transported to another time while watching our performance.”
Sword fighting is not without danger though. Last year Brown almost lost an ear in a sword fight. “We get lots of cuts and bruises and need the occasional stitches,” he said with a manly shrug.
The group was a huge hit at Rolling Hills Middle School’s Renaissance Day recently. “Their show was awesome!” said seventh grader Cynthia Anderson and several of her friends. Chase Cowen said that the warrior’s performance was his favorite part of the day. Perla Gonzalez especially enjoyed meeting the warriors in person after the show. “They were teaching me how to hold the swords and how to fence. When you see them out there fighting you think they are really mean but when you talk to them in person they are really nice.”
The warriors come from many different backgrounds but all of them have been sword fighting for years. These days Brown works hard at making the shows a success, but at one time was a Shipping and receiving coordinator for Sun Micro Systems ; Jeff Campbell works in construction and his wife Jen is a wedding coordinator specializing in Scottish weddings; Phread Cichowski is a computer engineer; Michael Garret is a minister and performs wedding ceremonies, and is also a bartender at The Kingshead Pub in Campbell where the group got their beginnings. Also a special thanks to Pipers: Cat Griffin and Jay Tuttle, for the grand tunes they played for the enjoyment of all. They belong to the Los Gatos (Montesereno Police Pipes And Drums Band)
“Sam and Barbara Summerscales over at Kingshead gave us our first paid show and they are like family to us,” said Brown.”We meet there on Thursday nights because its Celtic night and we wear our kilts and hang out with all of our friends. It’s a great community of people and we have a lot of fun.”
The Highlander Warriors are available for fairs, festivals, corporate events and school performances and can be reached at (510) 797-7895 or visit their website for pictures and more information at www.diarmid.com
